What is Live Action Video?

Live-action video refers to video content that features real people, animals, and environments, rather than animation or computer-generated imagery (CGI). This type of video captures live footage of actual scenes, making it ideal for projects where authenticity, human emotions, or physical interaction are essential.

Table of Contents

Common types of live-action videos include:

  • Product Promos: Showcasing a product’s features, benefits, and usage through real-world demonstrations.
  • Brand Videos: Highlighting a brand’s identity, values, and story through visually engaging and emotional narratives.
  • Interview Case Studies: Presenting real testimonials or expert opinions to build credibility and trust.
  • Training Videos: Using real people to demonstrate processes or skills, enhancing clarity and relatability.

In this article, we’ll explore the features and benefits of live-action video by looking at two successful campaigns:

  1. UNSW Aviation Case Study: A dynamic case study video highlighting UNSW’s Aviation program, showcasing students, faculty, and facilities to engage potential students by offering a realistic view of their educational experience.
  2. The Langham Corporate Campaign: A luxurious corporate video for The Langham Hotels, focusing on the high-end experience provided by the hotel group, using live-action elements to evoke a sense of elegance and exclusivity.

Campaign 1

UNSW Aviation - Case Study Video

The Client

UNSW Aviation School is the only Go8 (Group of Eight) institution offering comprehensive aviation degrees, training, and research programs.
Part of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the School of Aviation offers unique programs designed to prepare students for a future in this exciting and growing industry.

The Brief

With a reputation for producing top-tier professionals in the aviation industry, they sought to increase awareness and generate excitement around their courses. To achieve this, the School selected 1 Minute Media to produce a series of branded case study videos designed to captivate and engage prospective students.
The video needed to convey the advantages of a degree in aviation, as well as the specific benefits of studying with UNSW Aviation.

Our Approach

Take your future to new heights.

To persuade viewers to get on board with UNSW Aviation, we opted for a compelling mix of interview footage with actual students and staff, along with sweeping aviation shots to captivate the audience.

The use of real-life interviews and classroom footage ensured the video was highly relatable and authentic, while live-action clips of airplanes and pilots gave viewers a glimpse into the exciting future that could be theirs if they chose this path.

Finally, bold on-screen messaging was used to drive home the key messages, with energetic background music to build on the sense of excitement.

Key Takeaways

  • Keep it real: Featuring students and staff members gave the promo an honest and authentic feel, making the course seem accessible to the viewer.
  • Show, don’t tell: Footage of students engaging in classroom activities gave viewers a visual glimpse into the program, allowing them to envisage themselves there.
  • Make it exciting: Dramatic background music and impactful on-screen messages such as “Live Your Passion” brought energy and excitement to the video.

Campaign 2

The Langham Hotel - Recruitment Package

The Client

The Langham Hotel is a luxury 5-star hotel group renowned for timeless elegance and deluxe residential style.

The Brief

When a luxury international resort requires first class staff, our branded video package was designed to attract excellent recruits.

The campaign needed to capture the style and luxury of The Langham, while showcasing the appeal of joining its team.

Our Approach

From a variety of creative concepts, we determined that the most effective way to attract new recruits was through the power of social proof. Showcasing real experiences and testimonials builds trust and authenticity, helping potential candidates envision themselves in similar roles. We highlighted a “Day in the Life” of the Langham team, set at the flagship Langham Hotel in Sydney—a location that epitomizes luxury and world-class service.

Why a "Day in the Life" Video?

By giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the daily routines and responsibilities of the Langham staff, this video offers a relatable and aspirational glimpse into working at one of Sydney’s premier luxury hotels. It not only demonstrates the high standards and professionalism expected at The Langham but also highlights the rewarding and enriching career opportunities available to recruits.

The stunning backdrop of the flagship hotel, paired with real employee stories, creates an immersive experience, allowing prospective recruits to feel connected with the brand and excited about the possibility of joining such an esteemed team.

Key Takeaways

  1. Pay Attention to the Details: Live-action video captures the fine details of your brand, product, or service. For example, in a hotel setting, focusing on the luxury amenities, stylish décor, and stunning views can significantly enhance viewer engagement by showcasing what sets your business apart.
  2. Create a Seamless Flow: Smooth transitions between A-roll (the primary footage, such as interviews or narrations) and B-roll (complementary footage that enhances the story, such as visual cutaways) ensure the story flows naturally. This helps maintain viewer interest and ensures the message is delivered effectively.
  3. Make it Memorable: Including concise and memorable taglines like “one team, one dream” can help ensure the core message resonates with viewers and leaves a lasting impression. Such taglines capture the essence of the brand or campaign in a way that is easy to remember.
