Mission

WA Legal Services supports Aboriginal communities and collaborated with 1 Minute Media to create a 2D explainer animation for the “Yes” campaign in the 2023 Voice Referendum.

The objective was to educate and inform Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the referendum’s impact, combat misinformation, and encourage a “Yes” vote.

The videos, delivered ahead of schedule and in both English and Kimberley Kriol, saw over 1,100 views on social media, enhancing community awareness and engagement around the referendum’s key issues.

Creative Direction

To create a compelling and educational experience for the Voice to Parliament referendum, 1 Minute Media’s creative team utilised a combination of concept analysis, detailed screen design, and customised storyboard style frames.

The hero animation was built for flexibility, designed to scale with future topics, language needs, and repurposing across live events and digital platforms. Drawing on Indigenous design elements, our animators ensured cultural relevance while maintaining a strong visual identity. Close coordination with the Aboriginal Family Legal Service ensured the video met cultural sensitivities while addressing misinformation. Social media cuts were strategically designed to maximise reach, resulting in high engagement and increased awareness within the Kimberley region.

The final result is an informative, visually captivating animation package that effectively communicated key messages of the Yes campaign.

Results

1 Minute Media was key in helping the Aboriginal Family Legal Service (AFLS) and Aboriginal Interpreting WA (AIWAAC) achieve their goal of educating and raising awareness about the Voice to Parliament referendum.

In addition to direct educational forums and events, social media versions of the animation were shared on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Instagram posts reached over 1,100 views from just 353 followers, marking the highest engagement on their account.

On Facebook, AFLS Reels gained over 560 views. These social media successes came without any distribution budget, highlighting the videos’ organic reach.

These videos empowered many service users, informing them better about the referendum and its impact. 1 Minute Media’s work helped amplify this crucial educational effort within the community.
